More than 50 Seattle-area high school students representing 12 schools competed in Seattle Rep’s third annual August Wilson Monologue Competition in February 2013. All participants performed a 3-minute monologue from an August Wilson play at the February 23 semi-finals. Ten finalists went on to compete in a public competition at Seattle Rep on February 26.
This year’s judges Al Frank, Chic Street Man, Dena Levitin, G. Valmont Thomas, Misha Berson, and Peggy Scales selected the following winners and awarded them coveted cash prizes, in addition to an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to compete in the National Finals on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre in May 2013:
- First place and $500 cash prize winner – Zenobia Taylor, 15, Garfield HS, performed "Martha Pentecost" from Joe Turner's Come and Gone
- Second place and $250 cash prize winner – Reneeka Massey-Jones, 17, Timberline HS, performed "Vera" from Seven Guitars
- Third place and $100 cash prize winner – Alexandra Hope, 17, South Kitsap HS, performed "Rose Maxson" from Fences
